About Lakewood
A closer look at the area
Lakewood sits directly west of Denver, running from Sheridan Boulevard out toward the foothills. It is Colorado's fifth-largest city, but it reads as a collection of distinct neighborhoods rather than one downtown — Belmar around the retail core, Green Mountain climbing toward the hogback, Applewood in the north with larger lots and mature trees, and the older bungalow pockets closer to the Denver line.
Housing runs the full range: mid-century ranches on generous lots, 1970s and 80s two-stories, newer infill townhomes around Belmar, and custom homes on the Green Mountain slopes with front-range views. Because the stock spans seven decades, condition and updates drive value here more than in newer suburbs — two homes on the same street can price very differently.
Buyers usually come to Lakewood for the trade: quicker access to Red Rocks, Bear Creek, and I-70 west than almost anywhere else in the metro, while staying inside light rail's W Line and a straightforward commute downtown. Verify which parts of a property sit in the City of Lakewood versus unincorporated Jefferson County — services, permitting, and some ZIP designations differ.
Common questions
What buyers ask about Lakewood
Is Lakewood a good value compared with Denver proper?
Generally yes, on a price-per-square-foot basis, and buyers often get more lot. The trade is age of stock — much of Lakewood was built between 1955 and 1985, so inspection findings around sewer lines, electrical panels, and original windows matter more than they would on newer construction. Budget for those rather than being surprised by them.
What should I know about Green Mountain versus Belmar?
Green Mountain is residential and view-driven, with trail access straight off the neighborhood and a car-dependent daily pattern. Belmar is the walkable retail and dining core, with newer townhomes and condos and much more foot traffic. They are ten minutes apart and buy very differently — decide which daily pattern you actually want before you tour.
Why do some Lakewood homes have a Denver mailing address?
Postal boundaries and municipal boundaries do not match in the west metro. Parts of Lakewood and unincorporated Jefferson County carry Denver ZIPs such as 80232 or 80227. It affects mail, not which city provides services or collects taxes — always confirm the actual jurisdiction on a specific property before assuming.
